The CBC Fires Jiam Ghomeshi

According to a Toronto Star article published yesterday - the CBC has fired Jiam Ghomeshi over information the broadcaster received regarding Mr. Ghomeshi and his treatment of woman at work and in his personal life.  Shortly after being showed the door – Mr. Ghomeshi responded on Facebook, defending his actions and criticizing the CBC, saying he was fired for his sexual behavior, as he called it.  He went on to claim that he only engages in mutually agreed upon and consensual activities.  Today, according to Global News, Mr. Ghomeshi filed a $55 million lawsuit alleging the CBC misused confidential information provided to it in confidence and under common interest privilege.

At April Now, we thank the CBC for standing up for woman, and for turning its back on Mr. Ghomeshi.  No right minded person can condone the behavior contained in the allegations against Mr. Ghomeshi.  The CBC must defend its staff and reputation.

With regards to the $55 Million lawsuit, Howard Levitt, a leading employment lawyer in Toronto, says Mr. Ghomeshi doesn’t have a leg to stand on.  In an interview with Global News, Mr. Levitt notes that the employee was unionized, and is therefore bound by his union contract which contains terms regarding arbitration.  It seems Mr. Ghomeshi cant sue the CBC, and is probably using the lawsuit as a public relations ploy.  It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
